leonardleonard2PRICE…SOLD

Featured here is a sixth plate tintype of Abial E. Leonard, Company B, 20th Maine. This tintype is housed in mat only with corners bent back to hold the image. There are a few bends, digs and emulsion lines on the tintype. Leonard enlisted as Private and ended up as a Corporal. A nice chance to own a rare tintype from one of the most famous fighting regiments of the American Civil War.

The 20th was attached to Butterfield’s brigade, Porter’s division, and it formed a portion of the reserve force at Antietam. They were under fire for 36 hours at the battle of Fredericksburg, where the men acted with great gallantry in their first serious battle. A list of the important battles in which the 20th subsequently engaged includes Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Totopotomy, North Anna river, Bethesda Church, Hatcher’s run, Petersburg, Weldon railroad, Peebles’ farm, Boydton road, Gravelly run and Five Forks.
