Here is a wonderfully crisp CDV portrait of John Corson Smith, autographed below Truly Yours/ J.C. Smith/ Bvt. Col. 96th Ills., verso with inked Illinois address, which also appears to be written in Smith’s hand. Backmark shows I.H. Bonsall, 14th Army Corps Photographer, Cincinnati, OhioToning to photograph, few light spots, corners of mount rounded. Overall a fantastic piece indeed.

This view shows a bewhiskered Smith wearing the eagle boards of a full Colonel, this occurring on February 20th 1865 when Smith was brevetted that rank.

Entering service as the Major of the 96th with staff duty as Brigade Provost, Smith later became the regiments’ Lt. Colonel serving in that capacity during Chickamauga and the Atlanta campaign.
