Interesting quarter-plate tintype of two soldiers, one in full uniform with weapon, one not. Perhaps this is a father and son as one looks much older than the other. But of course we will probably never know that answer. Housed in glass, mat, and preserver, no case.

E, 14th Maine Infantry, on Dec. 11, 1861.  He was promoted to sergeant in 1862, re-enlisted on New Year’s Day 1864, and was killed in action Sept. 19, 1864 at Winchester, Virginia.  Thompson was one of eight soldiers in his regiment killed that day, along with 29 wounded, two taken POW, and three missing. Overall very good condition.

Sixth Plate Tintype Union Veteran Reserve Corps Soldier

soldierPRICE…SOLD

Sixth plate tintype of a soldier wearing a grayish or light blue coat, eagle belt buckle, and McDowell-style federal forage cap — probably a Veteran Reserve Corps soldier though the coat lacks the trim and piping of the standard VRC uniform. There is possibly a knife or pistol in his belt but I cannot make it out 100%. Perhaps you will have better luck. Housed in a geometric/scroll Union case. Condition: Tintype with horizontal hairline cracks. Case missing a 0.25 x 1 in. section of the edge.

Col. Elmer Ellsworth 16th Plate Abbot Tintype

ellsworth1ellsworth2PRICE…SOLD

Col. Ellsworth Abbot Tintype in sixteenth-plate union case by Littlefield, Parsons & Co. (Berg 3-457, Geometric). No paper behind the Abbot tintype.

Colonel Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth (April 11, 1837 – May 24, 1861) was a law clerk and United States Army soldier, best known as the first conspicuous casualty[1] and the first Union officer killed[2] in the American Civil War.[3] Before his death, as tension built up toward the war, he had been the leader of a famous touring military drill team known as the “Fire Zouaves” and was a close personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. He was killed while removing a Confederate flag from the roof of the Marshall House Inn of Alexandria, Virginia, at Lincoln’s behest, as the flag had been visible from the White House as a defiant sign of the growing rebellion.
